This facility is located in Tynes Bay, on the northern coast of Bermuda.
The project, awarded in January 2007, is comprised of a 600,000 US gallon per day seawater desalination plant, a full standby electrical power plant and 1.27 miles of water delivery mains. The production capacity of the plant is split into two independent 600,000 US gallons per day units for greater operational flexibility.
The first phase of this facility was commissioned in December 2008. The second phase is scheduled to be commissioned in the third quarter 2009 for a total of 1.2 MUSGPD. All the water produced by the facility is sold to the Ministry of Works and Engineering and Housing, Water and Sewerage Section of the Government of Bermuda.
The cost of electricity on Caribbean Islands is typically 4 to 5 times greater than in the United States, and Bermuda is no exception. A critical factor in the design and operation of this plant is energy efficiency. To that end, the plant utilizes an isobaric pressure exchanger technology to recover energy from the high pressure brine stream.
The raw seawater for the plant is obtained from deep wells located near the plant, avoiding the expense associated with the pretreatment of seawater obtained from open sea intakes. Brine from the plant is disposed of in the adjacent electrical power plant’s open sea discharge canal.
An advanced computer control system monitors the plant 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This system helps minimize staffing requirements as the plant is not manned on nights and weekends.
